Hello GREN Mappers,
As you may know, we are preparing to release the first public version of the GREN Map system software this year. At our last meeting, we discussed a draft list of tasks remaining before we are ready to do so. The list can be found on the Working Group’s wiki:
https://wiki.geant.org/display/GlobalMap/Version+1.0+Release+Task+List
We are looking for members to participate in two ways:
1. Review the task list. Please let me know if you feel there are any items missing to get ready for “version one point zero” release, or if you have any other feedback about the list. (Note that of course we intend for development to continue after v1.0 is released. There is a long wish list of features still in the backlog, and surely more will be proposed once this is out in the wild. For the moment, we want to identify what is required as a bare minimum for the system to function usefully and securely enough to start assembling real data and publishing some basic maps.)
2. Sign up to oversee tasks. We are looking specifically for names attached to the “Managed By” field for each task, not the “Assigned To” fields for the subtasks. What this means is that accepting these responsibilities would not necessarily imply doing any of the actual work (although we would welcome that too!), but rather to plan the implementation, recruit people to do the work, supervise the task, ensure it gets done, and briefly report on progress when appropriate. The task list page may look long, but don’t be fooled, the tasks are mostly each quite small; many likely involve only a handful of hours!
Please reach out to me if you have any feedback or questions, or if you’d like to go ahead and sign up to manage a task! Our imminent meeting is also another great time to bring anything up.
Ideally, we request your responses by February 1.
Cheers,
Ryan
Hi Tom and Alex
Good to hear from you.
It was a bit of a unexpected shock. Fortunately I was with specialists at a high quality hospital here, who were able to cope quickly with the situation. I expect to be at home tonight.
Michael

Hi all
Sorry to have missed today's meeting without warning. This was caused by my spending last night in hospital after a scheduled visit to take some cell samples resulted in excessive bleeding, which required corrective measures. I should be home tonight or tomorrow.
Michael

Hello Everyone,
I hope you all had a happy holidays and New Year.
In the last working group I brought up the topic of handling authentication in the GREN node. To be clear this will just be for administrators of a GREN Map instance, not someone viewing the map — that will be open.
Currently for the development and sandbox instance we are using the built in django username and password functionality and as we all know in the modern world this is not adequate for going live.
I brought up the option of using FIM / Federated SSO (eduGAIN) as the authentication mechanism. Marco very eloquently argued the case that we should make federated SSO the only option. Those that don't have FIM/SSO are encouraged to get it set up or request help to get it set up. Having exception discourages adoption and in South America RedCLARA now insists on it for all their services. (Marco please feel free to add or correct me if I have mischaracterised your point here). This view strongly aligns with CANARIE's approach. The general consensus among the other GREN Mapping working group members present was that SSO was pretty much ubiquitous, especially in Europe, and that support for other regions could be provided in one way or another.
Not having to be concerned with password management and protection of PII is of great benefit to adopting SSO.
We would therefore like to propose for the initial release of the GREN Map, we allow Admin logins only via SSO.
This is a big decision so I would like to give other members of the working group the opportunity to have their say. We can discuss more at the next Working Group meeting on the 11th January or via email exchange if you cannot make it then.
Best Regards,
Dan.
