Hello Routing Working Group,

I wanted to let you know about a weekly series of talks coming up that may be of interest to you, organized by Jason Zurawski at ESnet.

The next CI Eng Lunch & Learn talk will occur Friday October 8th, 2021 @ 2pm ET (6pm UTC).   The speakers will be Brenna Meade & Ed Moynihan from International Networks at Indiana University and they will be talking about “Investigating, troubleshooting, and improving performance with NetSage and the GNA-G Routing WG”.  Here is a quick abstract for the talk:

In addition to operating several NSF-funded international R & E circuits, our team at International Networks at Indiana University (IN@IU) also works closely with our global partners to ensure that end users are getting the network performance they expect, end-to-end. Of the many issues we see that affect the performance of international data flows, one of the most prevalent is poor or inefficient routing. For example, after changes or additions to trans-oceanic capacity, we often see traffic with both source and destination in Europe traversing exchange points in the US (traffic from CERN destined for universities in Europe routed via New York). Similarly, we see Asian traffic destined for Europe routed via the US (often crossing the Pacific twice). Our team at IN@IU uses the measurement and monitoring tool NetSage to help us identify these routing issues; but fixing them is a much more difficult (often non-technical) challenge. Our Lunch and Learn talk will provide an overview of how IN@IU is using NetSage to identify international routing issues (and other performance problems) and will introduce a new, international routing working group, led by IN@IU, that is bringing together members of the global REN community and developing strategies to begin addressing these issues in a more coordinated way.
