Greetings GREN Mappers,
As discussed at the last meeting, we are holding a final call to review the draft list of user stories we have compiled. This list defines the scope of the goals of this group, as summarized in our charter, from a high level, and will inform the data schema and reference visualisation implementation(s) we develop.
Following this meeting, we will incorporate feedback once more, and produce version 1.0 from the current draft. The document will still be subject to change as the project unfolds, but we'd like to achieve consensus internally up to this point prior to submitting the document for external review. We'd also like to begin work on the schema, and having stability in the requirements is helpful.
Optionally, if you have any suggestions to submit in writing, please do so by e-mailing either the whole group (using the mailing list) or just the chairs (me and Tom Fryer) by the end of Friday.
The current draft can be found on our wiki:
https://wiki.geant.org/display/GlobalMap/Global+Interactive+Map
Cheers,
Ryan

Alain, your comment D-2 is most timely. At some point - probably when preparing the meta-data format - we have to review security implications of the information asked for, and decide if we 1) only include information that is OK for public access, or 2) create a mechanism for sharing mapping information only among trusted parties.
I will unfortunately not be able to join the meeting today. A few comments on the v0.7 draft document:
- page numbers on the document would be nice
- It might be a good idea to make explicit (in the Introduction, maybe?) that the data format is also intended to be useful for static and offline maps.
- There’s a couple of important comments on N-2 that I believe we should address in the text
- in a couple of place (N-4, V-2 being examples), there’s multi-tagging and extensible tagging. I agree with those, but I think we should make it clear that tags must be standardised, to ensure consistent use of the same tag for the same thing.
- The point on subsea cable systems (L-6) is could be moved to L-10, as it’s really just another way of doing waypoints.
- I still think the reference to “central data base” (D-1) is too implementation specific at this point.
I wish all a productive meeting today.
/Lars

Dear Ryan
As promised, I am writing on the particular item of submarine cable systems, which are widely used for international communications, and require some assistance in visualisation so as to create trajectories which do not (usually) cross land/sea frontiers.
One way of handling these artefacts would be to have another class of objects corresponding to cable routes, similar to Links, but at a different level. It is apparently well-known that the Telegeography mapping database holds mapping information by cable route, and this information may be made available to third parties in the form of KML files, which seem to differ from year to year in accordance with Telegeography's aesthetics. (For instance, see: https://www.esri.com/en-us/maps-we-love/gallery/submarine-cables , and http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com/2016/01/submarine-cable-maps.html )
It seems to me that the GREN data base could include a "cables" section, derived from the Telegeography (or alternative) mapping data for submarine cables, and that suitable links could be maintained to this cable information for visualisation and other purposes.
I presented this proposal at the recent meeting in Denmark, and would like to make it better known in this group.
Best wishes, Michael
