For those of us GREN Mappers at TechEx, let’s meet up!
Please come find me around 5:30 (local time) during the Sponsor Social this evening to say hi. I’ll hang out near the middle; I’m wearing a brown jacket, and shockingly, I look approximately the same as I do in our many VC calls.
Cheers,
Ryan
[Rescheduled from Dec. 10 to Dec. 17 due to TechEx conference.]

Hello GREN Mappers,
I am at the Internet2 Technology Exchange conference, along with several other members of our working group. The schedule is ramping up to be pretty busy here! Consequently, we feel it would be best to postpone 2019’s last Map WG meeting, currently scheduled for tomorrow, to next week. Tom and I have proposed Tuesday, December 17, but slightly later than usual at 14:00 UTC. I will follow up to this e-mail with a meeting invitation containing a Zoom URL.
If you’re also at TechEx and we haven’t yet connected, please reach out!
While I have your attention, I’d like to briefly recap the activity of the group over the last couple of quarters, and give a sneak peek into our next steps. We have begun to review and mature the GRENML specification drafted earlier this year under the tutelage of John Macauley at ESnet, to make sure it’s in line with NML best practices. The Working Group has reviewed and accepted a proposal presented by CANARIE to guide development of a distributed database system to implement the data-related requirements established by the WG. Essentially, this distributed database would provide a set of tools to allow and encourage each REN in the GREN to maintain their own data, and publish and consolidate this data hierarchically. Visualisations (actual maps!), including a reference example we will create later in the development roadmap, could be written or adapted to retrieve their data from an instance of this distributed database. CANARIE will begin development of this system in January, and has committed to continue development through 2020. It is the hope of this WG that other RENs will also join the effort, and CANARIE has offered to co-ordinate the development effort. To this end, we have prepared a document that outlines a request to participate in this implementation initiative, which I will distribute later today under separate cover — we hope this document will support your attempts within your organisations to secure commitments to participate!
I’ve uploaded a couple of documents relevant to the update above to our wiki:
https://wiki.geant.org/display/GlobalMap/Documents+in+Progress
I’m also in the process of updating the rest of the wiki to reflect our recent activity and status, and will be updating the GNA-G with a slightly more thorough version of the above recap this week.
Cheers,
Ryan

Due to a technical failure that aborted the regular meeting a few days ago, this is a supplemental intermediate meeting to discuss the recent implementation architecture proposal from CANARIE, and any other business arising.
Regular bi-weekly meetings will resume on Oct. 29, with the recurring meeting invitation sent (and re-sent) previously.
Cheers,
Ryan

Greetings GREN Mappers,
Attached is a slide deck initially presented at the last meeting, slightly revised based on feedback gathered then and since. It contains a proposal for the architecture of a solution that we believe meets the needs of the project, as identified by this group over the last year or so.
Please review it and let this group know if you have any thoughts. Ideally, if there is wide acceptance of the proposal, we’d like to consider it approved by the October 29 meeting. If intermediate feedback is supportive, we’ll continue to flesh out the proposal before then with more supporting documentation, such as a mapping table of how it meets the requirements, sample work packages, and more. We’ll also incorporate feedback gathered along the way.
Meanwhile, I look forward to meeting tomorrow. If there is appetite to do so, we can run through the proposal again for anyone who missed it last time.
Cheers,
Ryan

Greetings GREN Mappers,
This meeting is to kick off the next round of work on this project.
This Tuesday’s meeting co-incides with the start of the CANARIE National Summit. If any of you will be at that event, let me know and we can participate together in person.
Proposed agenda:
1. Present a proposal for a draft architecture of a system solution for the GREN map distributed database.
2. Request active participation from other members of this working group, and begin to define the parameters for this work.
3. Discuss CANARIE’s plan for participation in this project, and how we will use the fruits of it in the coming year.
4. Discuss a potential gathering of the group at Tech Ex in New Orleans in December.
5. Other business?
Cheers,
Ryan
