TNC23, and hold the date - upcoming Community VCs

Hi all It was wonderful to see many of you at TNC23 in Tirana, Albania. We had a very well-attended in-person GNA-G meeting as well as a plenary presentation slot, and the GNA-G came up in conversation multiple times throughout the week. There’s a clear appetite to develop the global R&E network in various ways, and our little community is seen as being well positioned to get this done. Well done to all of you for being part of this! We’ll get a summary out very soon for those of you who weren’t able to be there in person, identifying the various activities that we’re being asked to drive. And to ride the energy coming from TNC and send the northern hemisphere off on their summer holidays on a high, we’re planning a pair of Community VCs a little over a week from now, focused on cyber-security. There will be some updates from some NRENs who we don’t usually get to hear from, plus a discussion to kick off the Working Group focusing on improving the overall security maturity of the GREN. GNA-G in-person meeting at TNC23

Hi all, Hope you’re all well, as we (unbelievably) are almost at the halfway point of 2023. For those who are travelling to Tirana in Albania for TNC23, we’re planning an in-person meeting. It’s listed on the TNC23 website https://tnc23.geant.org/programme/ and is scheduled for Tuesday 6 June, 8.30-10.30am. Please note that it will take place at the Rogner Hotel, 3 minutes walk from the main conference venue. (https://tnc23.geant.org/visit/#venue) We’ll be updating the GNA-G website event page with agenda & details shortly. In particular, we’ll add a zoom link for those who can’t attend in person. The GNA-G meeting last year was very lively – look forward to seeing you there! In addition to this side-meeting, the TNC23 Program Committee accepted our submission of a presentation in the main program to talk about who the GNA-G is and what we do. This is scheduled for Tuesday 6 June, 14.00-15.30am in the Concert Hall, as part of the “Global packet delivery that works!” session. Ivana is chairing this session, and I’ll be giving the presentation. Given this the main plenary room, I’d encourage as many of you to come as possible… so I’m not talking to an empty room :-) TNC is always a great event, and a great chance for us to meet in person. For those of you in Working-Groups, don’t hesitate to grab the opportunity to meet up. Dear GNA-G Community member, After evaluating the nominees, processing the feedback received, and considering the full composition of the GNA-G Leadership Team (LT) the GNA-G Nominations Committee (NomCom) announces herewith the new LT member: * Alex Moura (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) for a 48-month term, end 2027 The leadership of the GNA-G is now back at full strength with the members continuing to serve the LT: * Marco Teixeira (RedCLARA, Brazil) until end 2025 * Ivana Golub (PSNC, Poland) until end 2023 * Buseung Cho, KISTI, Korea) until end 2025 * Harvey Newman (Caltech, USA) until end 2023 * David Wilde (AARnet, Australia) until end 2025 We want to thank the nominees, all highly qualified and strong members of the GNA-G community, for stepping up as a candidate for the LT. Welcome to 2023, and "hold the date"

Hi all, On behalf of the Leadership Team, welcome to 2023! I hope that this coming year is productive and fun for all of you. At the last Community VCs, we pencilled in a pair of upcoming VCs for this week to be focused on Working-Group updates. We’ve decided to push this back a month to give us a bit more time to prepare. In order to have enough time for each Working-Group, we’re also planning on running two pairs of VCs. Please pencil in 15 February 6-8 am UTC and 8-10 pm UTC for the first pair of VCs. Dear GNA-G community member, The GNA-G Nominations Committee (NomCom) is pleased to announce 4 nominees for the GNA-G Leadership Team (LT). Now is the time for the GNA-G community to give feedback and guidance to the NomCom. The nominees On January 15th the NomCom opened the call for Nominations. We are very happy with the response to that call. We are pleased to announce the nominated individuals: * Jennifer Schopf (TACC/UT, USA) * Ed Moynihan (Indiana University, USA) * Alex Moura (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) * Richard Klinger (Canarie, Canada) The current Leadership Team consists of five co-chairs: Buseung Cho (KISTI, Korea), Harvey Newman (Caltech, USA), David Wilde (AARnet, Australia), Marco Teixeira (RedClara, Brazil), Ivana Golub (PSNC, Poland/Croatia) and has one vacancy that will be filled with one of the candidates above, selected by the NomCom. Introduction of new GREN Engineering Advancement workgroup

All, For those of you that joined yesterday’s GNA-G community VC 1a<https://www.gna-g.net/attend-a-meeting/gna-g-community-vcs-q1a-2023/>, you have seen my presentation for the new GREN Engineering Advancement workgroup (if you want you can download them from https://filesender.surf.nl/?s=download&token=651fac23-a738-456e-81f2-a6b01a… link valid till march 9th, afterwards if they are unavailable on the GNA-G website drop me an e-mail). The aim of this workgroup pioneer, try, test, experiment with solutions to better/more efficiently/redundantly run services over links part of the GNA-G. We have been doing vlan engineering for ever and know the downsides of it. On the other hand, almost all of us run a MPLS enabled network that provides far more protection/redundancy/fast failover. What can we do to also bring this into the world of GNA-G and the links with which we interconnect NREN’s? This workgroup wants to inventorize what possibilities are out there and test them. This knowledge will be distributes to the relevant engineering groups running systems like ANA-Engineering or AER-Engineering. Who on there turn can provide feedback for additional testing or ideally decide to implement it. The goal of this workgroup is therefor strictly focussed how can we enhance operation on systems between production networks. So no very experimental stuff like thing that could be considered in the Data Intensive Science workgroup as prototyping and pre-production. Over the past months I’ve reached out to the ANA partners at Nordunet 2022, SuperComputing 2022 and Internet2 TechEX 2022 and noticed a lot of enthusiasm and interest in this subject. With this I want to call for engineers interested in participating in this workgroup. Folks that have ideas and can contribute in testing them. GNA-G Leadership Team Call for Nominations

The GNA-G Nominations Committee (NomCom) is accepting nominations for the GNA-G Leadership Team (LT) through 23:00 GMT 31 January 2023. The LT has one vacancy. Introduction The current Leadership Team consists of five co-chairs: Buseung Cho (KISTI), Harvey Newman (Caltech), David Wilde (AARnet), Ivana Golub (PSNC), and Marco Teixeira (RedClara) with one vacancy. As we are filling a vacancy due to an LT member leaving before end of their term, the new LT member will be elected for a 48-month (4-year) term+ the remainder of 2023 in order to maintain the LT election cycle. Anyone working in the R&E networking community is eligible to serve in the LT. The NomCom will be looking for a candidate with technical competence, organizational skills, or relevant experience. The NomCom will emphasize diversity in the composition of the LT, in particular age, gender, and continent. Experience in the field of R&E networking and/or running Global eXchange Points (GXPs) is welcome. What does it mean to be an LT member? The LT looks after the long-term evolution of the networking layer of the Global R&E Network (GREN) and provides oversight to the GNA-G Working Groups. The LT also manages the GNA-G website and consults with the Executive Liaison from time to time. For more information see https://www.gna-g.net/about-us/. On a regular basis, the LT meets by VC, to discuss progress, issues, and community meetings. Due to the global nature of the GREN, the work in GNA-G means a VC out of office hours, due to time zones. Also, the full GNA-G Community meets every now and then to discuss developments and next steps at global events as much as possible. Hence this involves occasional intercontinental travel. There is no reimbursement for serving on the LT, as this is deemed a community service supported by your home organization. How to get nominated? Any member of the GNA-G Community may nominate any member of the GNA-G Community for the open position; self-nomination is permitted. A nomination is only complete when supported by at least one other member from the community, from a different organization, participating in the GNA-G, than the nominee. In addition, the nominee must accept the nomination. A nomination can have two forms: 1. You can nominate someone + get a second from a member of the community + have the nominee accept the nomination; or 2. Nominate yourself + get a second from a member of the community. You must indicate why you want to join the GNA-G LT. Nominations should be sent to: nominations(a)lists.gna-g.net<mailto:nominations@lists.gna-g.net>. Accepted nominations will be made public to the GNA-G community. GNA-G meeting at TNC22 - a chance for you to guide the agenda

Hi all, For those of you who are going to be at TNC22 in Trieste, on behalf of the Leadership Team I’m looking forward to seeing you at our GNA-G meeting! This meeting will be different in structure to the Community VCs that we’ve been running over the last few years. It will be more of an open discussion of the strategy and aims of GNA-G, and how best to ensure that we’re succeeding in achieving these.
